arisen in the numerous cases of resumption of Insanitary Pro-
-perty, including riding-floors, scavenging-lanes and so on,
and claims for compensation under the Public Health and Build-
ings Ordinance. Last year I carried through the Kau U Fong and
On No Lanes resumptions and I understand that the resumption of
a large area including Mee Lun Lane has recently been decided
upon, and that I shall shortly be called upon to negotiate for
the purchase of some 50 houses estimated to be worth several
lacs of dollars.

Even were I to abandon my private practice,
it would be impossible for me to cope with the work single-
handed, and I should require a much larger staff than I am at
present allowed.

While I am prepared to pay out of my
pocket this year the salary of Mr. Morrell (to which must be
added the cost of his voyage from England) although he is
chiefly employed in work for the Government, I submit that for
1906 and following years 1 am entitled to press for at least
an equivalent increase in my salary.

My salary amounts to $4,200 per annum
plus exchange compensation (equal to £630 Sterling), during the
13 months from November, 1904, to December, 1905, I have to pay
Mr. Morrell £350 (including his voyage) and admission fee and
in 1906 I have to pay him £270, in 1907 £800 and in 1908 £330
approximately, subject to fluctuations in exchange.
